Embassy of India continues to provide Miscellaneous Consular Services through Postal mail/shipping.

Birth (out of India) of a new born child to Indian parents should be first registered at following MHA website, where details/procedure are available

As a next step, birth of the new born should be registered at the Embassy in order to obtain the Indian passport. The registration of birth must be done at the Embassy within one year of the Child's birth.

How to Apply by Mail:

Two copies of the print out of duly filled in, online MHA application form referred above, signed by both parents, same as in their current passport (duly notarized).

Notarized copy of the Birth Certificate of new born child issued by local authorities.

Self Sworn Affidavit of both parents that they have not taken any other nationality for the child.

Self Sworn Affidavit (NOC) of both parents that they have no objection to the registration and obtaining passport for the child.

Notarized photocopies of the first and last pages of current Indian passports of both parents. Photocopy (notarized) of the page showing valid US Visa Status.

Fee: A fee of US$25.00(Twenty-Five Only) and an additional fee of US$2.00 (Two Only) towards Indian Community Welfare Fund (ICWF) per application. The fees may be paid in two separate money order/cashiers’ cheque, drawn separately towards fee and ICWF, in favour of Embassy of India, Washington DC. Please send in the application enclosing a trackable pre-paid self-addressed return mailing envelope. Incomplete applications will be sent back indicating the requisites to complete those.

Processing Time: Same day, however, if unforeseen technical reasons occur, services can be delayed till those problems are resolved.

The fees may be paid in cash or as two separate money order/cashiers’ cheque, drawn separately towards fee and ICWF, in favour of Embassy of India, Washington DC.

How to Apply by Mail:

Applicants while forwarding applications by postal mail for this service may send only notarized copies of Passport and address proof. No originals required to be sent by post. The rest of the directions remains the same as listed below

Follow the same procedure to fill up the application and enclose the same required documents as detailed above in the section ‘how to apply in person’ and send in the application enclosing a trackable pre-paid self-addressed return mailing envelope. Incomplete applications will be send back indicating the requisites to complete those. Please note that while applying by mail two copies of the print out of duly filled in, online application form from MHA Website signed by both parents needs to be notarized and signatures of parents should be same as in their current passport.

Fee: A fee of US$25.00(Twenty-Five Only) and an additional fee of US$2.00 (Two Only) towards Indian Community Welfare Fund (ICWF) per application. The fee may be paid only as two separate money order/cashiers’ cheque, drawn separately towards fee and ICWF, in favour of Embassy of India, Washington DC.

Processing time : Ten working days from the date of receipt of mail at the Embassy subject to submission of all requisite documents by applicants.
