Exam applications are accepted online on a continuous basis for the titles of Engineer Trainee, Assistant Engineer, and Professional Engineer 1 in several concentrations. Qualified individuals who meet the title and transfer requirements are encouraged to apply.
To become an Engineer Trainee, you must possess a qualifying degree at the time of exam application;
Proof of passing the National Council of Examiners for Engineering and Surveying (NCEES) Fundamentals in Engineering (FE) exam AND one year of engineering experience in the applicable area.
To become an Assistant Engineer, you are required to have passed the FE,
to have a qualifying degree at the time of exam application, or one year of engineering experience in the applicable area.
To become a Professional Engineer 1, you are required to have a current New York State Professional Engineer’s license and registration.
To have either a qualifying degree at the time of exam application, or one year of engineering experience in the applicable area.

As an Engineer Trainee, you will serve a 24-month traineeship that leads to Assistant Engineer, Grade 20. During this time, you would train in and perform the duties of the Assistant Engineer. To advance to Assistant Engineer, you must have obtained proof of passing the National Council of Examiners for Engineering and Surveying (NCEES) Fundamentals of Engineering Examination (FE) and successfully completed the requirements of the traineeship to the satisfaction of the appointing authority.
As an Assistant Engineer, you would work under the close supervision of higher-level staff, apply engineering knowledge and offer a variety of consultative or evaluative services in various stages of an engineering project, from the design phase of planned projects through completion. You may supervise subordinate technical, engineering, administrative or support staff as required.
As a Professional Engineer 1, you would apply your knowledge of the mathematical, physical, and engineering sciences in several specialty areas. Professional Engineers provide the full range of professional engineering services including consultation, evaluation, planning, systems design, engineering surveys, or project oversight to ensure work conforms to accepted engineering standards. You may supervise and evaluate the work of subordinate engineers and technicians in projects such as the construction, extension, alteration, remodeling, and maintenance of roads, buildings, public and private water and sewer systems, electrical and power supply systems, fire protection systems, and large structures including major roads, environmental remediation systems, and bridges.
